A splendid evening remembering Brian Dawson

On Friday 16th October the Playhouse was completely sold out for a concert, celebrating the life of the well known and local folk musician Brian Dawson. Brian sadly passed away in the early hours of the morning on Friday 22nd November 2013 following a heart attack.

Brian was a folk song collector, muscian and singer. He was a member of The Meggies (founders of The Grimsby Folk Club in the 1960's) and The Broadside, but was perhaps better known in recent years for his solo performances and his encyclopedic knowledge of songs collected in his native Lincolnshire. Brian was also an expert in Lincolnshire dialect and the folk song collecting of Australian composer Percy Grainger.

Brian regularly decline any publicity and avoided being recorded resulting in little information online about him and his works.

Below we have posted two videos from YouTube that were recorded during the 'Concert for Brian' held at the Playhouse. The evening saw performances from Paul Dickinson, Nigel Creasey and Teri Clarke, Paul Bellamy and Dick Appleton, Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher, John Conolly and Tom Lane. All performers knew Brian and gave there evening free of charge to remember Brian and share some of his songs and anecdotes.
